F2: Doohan scores maiden win in Silverstone Sprint Race
Share
Virtuosi Racing’s Jack Doohan claimed the first Formula 2 victory of his career, dominating the Sprint Race in tricky conditions. Rain that had fallen over F1 qualifying provided a test for the drivers and one that the Alpine Academy driver managed best.
Doohan quickly picked his way through the pack, finding a favourite spot for overtaking into Village. He passed Enzo Fittipaldi for the lead in the early stages and never looked back, stretching his advantage up to beyond four seconds as the rest of the field tried to keep pace.
As the track dried, some struggled more than others. Ayumu Iwasa managed to climb to second having started sixth on the grid and was the quickest man on track by the end. He closed Doohan down in the final laps but couldn’t get him in time, ending up just 0.9s off at the chequered flag.
Fittipaldi continued his strong form, taking a second podium of the season in third place. The result lifted the Charouz Racing System driver into the top five in the drivers’ championship, ahead of Dennis Hauger.
Theo Pourchaire finished fourth, one place ahead of title rival Felipe Drugovich. Frederik Vesti and Logan Sargeant were able to capitalise late on after Jehan Daruvala’s tyres hit the cliff. The trio finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. Marcus Armstrong and Richard Verschoor completed the top 10.
Drugovich’s lead in the championship remains comfortable, dropping just one point to Pourchaire following the Sprint Race. His lead now sits at 48 points while MP Motorsport retain the top spot in the teams’ standings. ART Grand Prix move back ahead of PREMA Racing and into second, 132 points to 129.
The F2 Feature Race beings at 1005 local time on Sunday morning.
