FORMULA 2: De Vries secures second straight win in Monaco Feature Race
Share
Nyck de Vries blew the FIA Formula 2 title race wide open when he sealed his second victory in as many rounds in Monaco, producing a dominant lights-to-flag win in the Feature Race to finish in front of Carlin’s Nobuharu Matsushita and DAM's Sergio Sette-Camara.
The race was not without challenges for the 24-year-old, who saw a near six-second lead whittled down to nothing thanks to a red flag, which came as a result of Mick Schumacher’s attempts to squeeze between Tatiana Calderon and the barrier at La Rascasse.
Schumacher sent the Colombian into a spin and left Louis Deletraz with nowhere to go, which blocked the track and brought everyone to a halt. De Vries, however, made light work of the eventual restart and soon regained his advantage over Luca Ghiotto, who crossed the line in second but was disqualified after the race owing to a technical irregularity.
De Vries’s dominance was all the more significant given championship leader Nicholas Latifi’s woes further back. The Canadian had a race to forget, suffering collisions with both Schumacher and his PREMA team mate Sean Gelael, the latter incident resulting in a drive-through penalty that left him a lowly 13th place at the chequered flag.
