MUST-SEE: Charlie Whiting ducks for cover after massive F2 start shunt
Share
He’s the man who pushes the button to start every F1, F2 and GP3 race. But you can bet your bottom dollar Saturday’s F2 feature race will live longer in the memory of the FIA’s Race Director Charlie Whiting than most after he came a little too close to comfort to a massive start crash…
No sooner had he extinguished the five red start lights and sent 20 snarling F2 machines on their way, Whiting was forced to instinctively take evasive action as an unsighted Arjun Maini ploughed into the back of Nicholas Latifi’s stalled car at high-speed immediately below his starting position, sending debris flying in all directions.
You can watch the incredible moment, which both drivers and Whiting escaped unscathed, above.
After a lengthy Safety Car period, the race was eventually won by Williams-bound Briton George Russell, who also captured the title at his first attempt.
