MUST-SEE: Massive drama in Mugello as early restart results in chaotic four-car crash

Share

There was a chaotic start to the Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello as first the Safety Car was brought out after Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly crashed out on Lap 1, and then the race was red flagged after there was a second crash at the restart that wiped out four cars.

Verstappen and Gasly's race didn't even last two corners after the former's Red Bull was slow after the initial getaway, dropping him right back into the pack. Gasly then got squeezed between two other cars with Kimi Raikkonen hitting Verstappen from behind and pitching him into a spin, as Gasly ended up stuck in the gravel trap as well. Both were out of the race.

After several laps under double waved yellow flags to clear Verstappen and Gasly's cars, the Safety Car pulled off the track. As is his right as the race leader, Valtteri Bottas chose to wait until the last moment to put the power down - but further down the pack several drivers, assuming the race was back up to speed, were already hard on the power.

As those ahead suddenly slowed, Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi ploughed into the back of Kevin Magnussen's Haas and Nicholas Latifi's Williams, with McLaren's Carlos Sainz then crashing into the ensuing debris, as each was eliminated in a shower of carbon fibre.

The race was immediately red flagged as the drivers – who all appeared to be unhurt – climbed out of their wrecked cars and returned to the pits.
