MUST-SEE: Sargeant crashes out in Zandvoort qualifying after making his first Q3 appearance in F1

Logan Sargeant’s fine qualifying efforts in Zandvoort were undone by a huge crash into the barrier in Q3, bringing out the first red flags of the session, and leaving his Williams team with a hefty repair job ahead of tomorrow’s race.

Sargeant was making the first Q3 appearance of his rookie season after sneaking through to the final part of the session ahead of the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll. However, his efforts were ruined by a spin into the barrier at Turn 2.

The American had just set the second fastest time behind his team mate, Alex Albon, and had set off round the track once more. However, he seemed to put his slick tyres on the damp part of the track, which sent the American spinning through the gravel and into the barrier.

Thankfully Sargeant confirmed that he was okay and even gave a thumbs up to the fans. But the rookie couldn’t hide his frustration after he made it back to the paddock.

“It’s disappointing, obviously you never want to leave the team with a damaged car, and one that’s pretty damaged as well, so that’s the disappointing part,” said Sargeant. “Plenty of positives going through quali though. I think Q1 was good, when it was all on the line at the end of Q2, I was able to put a lap in to transfer to Q3.

“We’ve been good all weekend, I felt really good in the dry yesterday, but I touched the white line, which must have been wet, but there was no saving it. So I’m sorry to the team.”

Asked if he still had confidence for Sunday’s race, however, Sargeant replied: “For sure. My long run pace yesterday was really good, happy with where the car’s at. Obviously need to rebuild it overnight so hopefully we can get as close as where we’ve had it the last two days. Reset and go again.”

Meanwhile, Sargeant’s team mate Alex Albon gave Williams something to cheer about, as he claimed an equal career-best P4, on a track that wasn’t expected to suit the Williams FW45.
