Piastri extends F2 title lead with pole while Doohan takes P1 in F3 qualifying

Alpine junior Oscar Piastri added four more points to his championship advantage in Formula 2, securing pole for the third round in a row ahead of Red Bull prodigy Jehan Daruvala and Sauber Academy driver Theo Pourchaire in qualifying at Sochi.

Piastri (main image) spent the majority of the session battling title rival Guanyu Zhou for pole, but the Alpine Test driver dropped down to fourth at the flag thanks to late efforts from Daruvala and Pourchaire.

Ralph Boschung rounded out the top five, ahead of Jake Hughes, Robert Shwartzman and Liam Lawson.

Finishing 10th overall, Dan Ticktum will start ahead of Red Bull junior Juri Vips in Saturday’s reverse grid Sprint Race 1, which takes place at 1030 local time. Qualifying set the grid for Sunday morning's Feature Race that takes place at 1120 local time, while the grid for Race 2 at 1645 on Saturday will be set by reversing the top 10 finishers of Sprint Race 1.

In Formula 3, Jack Doohan set up a thrilling finale by taking pole position, and the four points that come with it, in qualifying to pile the pressure onto championship leader, and fellow Red Bull junior, Dennis Hauger, who finished a disappointing ninth.

Doohan notched his second pole of the season ahead of Trident team mate Clement Novalak and Jenzer Motorsport’s Johnathan Hoggard, who each claimed their best qualifying results to date.

Mercedes junior Frederik Vesti finished in fourth as Sauber Academy driver Juan Manuel Correa made it into the top five on a Friday for the first time in F3. Lorenzo Colombo, Alex Smolyar and Caio Collet also took spots in the top 10. Finishing 12th overall, Alpine junior Victor Martins will start ahead of Logan Sargeant in this evening’s reverse grid Race 1, which takes place at 1725 local time.

Qualifying set the grid for Sunday morning's Race 3 that takes place at 0955 local time, while the grid for Race 2 at 1340 on Saturday will be set by reversing the top 12 finishers of Friday's Race 1.
