ROAD TO F1: Schumacher strengthens F2 points lead with victory over Tsunoda and title rival Ilott in Sochi

On a weekend where all of the talk has been centred around Lewis Hamilton potentially equalling Michael Schumacher’s win record in Formula 1, his son, Mick Schumacher, did the family name proud. The Ferrari junior clinched his second win of the season in the Formula 2 Feature Race at Sochi, with arguably his most accomplished performance in the top tier of junior motorsport.
Red Bull junior and polesitter Yuki Tsunoda had looked so assured for so much of the race, but Schumacher’s impressive tyre management skills were once again on display, hauling his PREMA ahead with 10 laps to go.
Schumacher’s main title rival, Callum Ilott, was very briefly challenging him for the lead, but he ended up clinging on to third behind Tsunoda by the skin of his front wing, finishing just 0.025s ahead of Luca Ghiotto in a thrilling race for the line.
It was a disappointing morning for in-form Renault Academy driver Christian Lundgaard. The Dane had scored three podiums from his previous four races, but retired on the very first lap in Sochi, after a coming together with Juri Vips and Pedro Piquet.

It was a similarly frustrating race for another of the title contenders, Robert Shwartzman, as the Russian struggled to 11th on home soil, finishing out of the points for the third race in a row.
Schumacher's win puts him on 186 points for the season, 18 ahead of nearest rival Ilott, with just Sunday's Sprint Race and then a double header in Bahrain to go in the 2020 season.
