Williams have signed an up-and-coming 10-year-old karting prodigy to their academy after he demonstrated rapid progression and impressive results across a number of series.

Lucas Palacio, an American racer who first took to the wheel at the age of three, becomes the Grove outfit’s newest and youngest addition to their junior programme as he joins figures such as Lia Block and Luke Browning.

At just six years old, Palacio won on his official karting debut before he was permitted to enter the Mini Swift category in 2022 with an age waiver, where he was victorious in all three National Championships.

The American talent has continually impressed with his consistent podium finishes and wins, leading to him graduating to international karting earlier this year.

Vowles has repeatedly explained that he wants Williams to invest in their long-term future

He said: “This is a dream come true to be part of the Williams Racing family. I’ve always loved racing since the first time I drove a kart so it’s amazing to be part of this team. Now I can’t wait to get started with James Vowles, Sven Smeets, and everyone at Grove!”

The move will allow Palacio to receive training and guidance from the team as he progresses throughout various categories in the hope that he will join other Academy products like Franco Colapinto in moving up the motorsport ladder.

This year alone, he placed second in the WSK Super Master Series and fourth in the ACI Italian Championship 60 Mini Class, cementing his prodigy status.

Smeets, Sporting Director at Williams, said that the team are “very pleased to announce that Lucas has joined the Williams Racing Driver Academy”.

“He’s an exciting young talent that has shown promise in his first few years in karting and has progressed quickly for his age,” he added. “We’re looking forward to supporting Lucas as he continues to develop throughout his karting career.”
