Aston Martin have appointed ex-Alfa Romeo Chief Designer Luca Furbatto to be their new Engineering Director, with long-term tech boss Andrew Green promoted to Chief Technical Officer in a major reshuffle for the Silverstone-based squad.

Green has been Technical Director for the team – previously known as Force India, then Racing Point – since 2010, but following Furbatto's recruitment he will now be the team’s CTO, to take a "global perspective on the company’s mid to long-term technical strategy", according to Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer.

Furbatto spent ten years at McLaren before spells with Manor and Toro Rosso, before becoming Chief Designer at Sauber in 2017 and remaining there when the team became Alfa Romeo Racing. Aston Martin say his signing is one of a "number of significant new hires", and Furbatto will be working for the team ahead of the 2022 season.

“The recruitment of Luca Furbatto adds an exceptionally talented engineer to our technical team,” said Green. “He brings a vast amount of experience with him built up from more than two decades in the sport spent at several leading Formula 1 teams. This is the first of many key appointments we are making in line with our ambition to establish Aston Martin at the front of the grid.”

Furbatto joins Aston Martin from Alfa Romeo

Lawrence Stroll – father of Aston Martin driver Lance – took control of the team in 2018 and following the outfit's rebranding as Aston Martin this season, has set ambitious targets to be racing at the very front of the grid. To help achieve this, a new factory is being built, and Szafnauer says they will be hiring an extra 250 people.

“As we continue to add weight to our technical team, we are hugely excited that Luca Furbatto has chosen to join Aston Martin," Szafnauer said. "Working with our existing engineering group, he will bring a valuable perspective and knowledge to help shape our approach in the short and medium term.

“This appointment coincides with Andrew Green stepping up to a new role where he will take a global perspective on the company’s mid to long-term technical strategy.”

Furbatto said: “It is a project that has all the ingredients for success – committed leadership, a talented workforce, and fresh investment in resources. I am looking forward to playing my part in establishing this team at the very top of the sport.”
