F1 FANTASY: What were the best and worst teams for the German Grand Prix?
It may have been a modern classic at the 2019 German Grand Prix, but the topsy-turvy race meant that plenty of you got bitten in F1 Fantasy last weekend. So, after the action at Hockenheim, who were the best and worst F1 Fantasy performers? The results are in.
There were 15,719,608 valid team combinations for the German Grand Prix, meaning just a 0.000006% chance of selecting the best team.
And how many of you managed to overcome those odds and do that? A big, fat zero. Yep, for the first time this year, no-one managed to pick the best squad, which was also the cheapest ‘Best Team’ we’ve seen so far in 2019.
Here’s who was in it, as well as who you should have avoided like that drag strip at Hockenheim’s Turn 16.
Best Team
Total points: 246
Budget: 82.9
Sebastian Vettel: 27 points
Daniil Kvyat: 66 points (Turbo Driver)
Carlos Sainz: 27 points
Max Verstappen: 50 points
Lance Stroll: 28 points
Constructor: Toro Rosso – 48 points
Ready for a surprise? This is the first time that Sebastian Vettel has appeared in the ‘Best Team’ section of this feature this year, the German scoring well for scything through the field from 20th to second by the race end.
If you’d turbo’d Daniil Kvyat, you were probably groaning on Saturday evening after he’d qualified 14th. But you were laughing uproariously 24 hours later, as he secured the third podium of his career, and 66 F1 Fantasy points into the bargain.
Carlos Sainz now shares the joint-most ‘Best Team’ appearances with Valtteri Bottas for his sixth appearance this year after finishing the Grand Prix in fifth place. Race-winner Max Verstappen took home a healthy 50 points, while the squad was completed this week by Lance Stroll, who for the first time this year got points for getting into Q2.
And well done to those of you who chose Toro Rosso as your constructor, with the Italian team making their first appearance in the ‘Best Team’ this year, the first non-Mercedes/Ferrari/Red Bull team to manage that feat in 2019.
Worst Team
Total points: -64
Budget: 72.2
Charles Leclerc: -9 points
Daniel Ricciardo: -13 points
Nico Hulkenberg: -8 points
Lando Norris: -28 points (Turbo Driver)
Sergio Perez: -7 points
Constructor: Alfa Romeo – 1 point
In a race that was uncommonly stuffed with retirements, the -15 points for a DNF in F1 Fantasy really stung some of you out there – and you’ll note that all five drivers in the ‘Worst Team’ failed to reach the chequered flag.
Leclerc and Hulkenberg stuffed it in the Turn 16/17 barriers, Sergio Perez stuffed it in the Turn 10 barriers, while Ricciardo and Norris both suffered car failures, Turboing Norris losing you a galling -28 points.
Meanwhile Alfa Romeo might have been a good shout for constructor had the team not been penalised post-race, thus losing what would have been only their second double-points finish of the year.
Incidentally, this was also the most expensive ‘Worst Team’ of the year…
