Sami Meguetounif won a dramatic Monza Feature Race that swung the balance of the championship one way and then the other.

Trident team mate Leonardo Fornaroli was crowned 2024 FIA Formula 3 champion in dramatic fashion, as he made a crucial overtake at the final corner on the last lap to pip Gabriele Minì to the title.

Having started from pole, Fornaroli fell to second on the first lap and then ran wide through Ascari on Lap 7, dropping behind team mate Meguetounif and, crucially for him, closest rival for the championship Minì.

After fighting his way back past the PREMA Racing and Alpine Academy driver, Fornaroli looked set to seal the title until he was re-caught by Minì and ART Grand Prix’s Christian Mansell in the final laps of the race.

Minì was able to pass his title rival for second place, but it was Mansell’s move on Fornaroli at the Roggia chicane on the penultimate lap that put the PREMA driver ahead on points by one.

With his championship in the balance, Fornaroli hustled Mansell on the final lap and made a dive to the inside of Parabolica to move himself back up to third, good enough to secure the F3 championship.

While Minì finished second on the road, he was later disqualified for a technical infringement, moving Fornaroli up to second, and Mansell back onto the podium in third.

Fornaroli became the first Italian driver to win the F3 drivers’ title.
