F3: Williams junior O'Sullivan grabs maiden pole in Silverstone qualifying

Williams junior Zak O’Sullivan set the track alight as he stormed his way to his first pole position in Formula 2. Poignantly, he secured an emotional maiden pole for Carlin in the championship at both his and the team’s home race.

The final few minutes saw O’Sullivan and Ferrari Driver Academy member Arthur Leclerc nip-and-tuck in the fight for P1 all the way to the chequered flag – with the 17-year-old Brit coming out on top by only 0.027s.

Meanwhile, Zane Maloney once again showed strong one-lap pace to secure third for Trident. Alpine Academy junior Caio Collet didn’t manage to improve on his final attempts but still secured his best Qualifying result of the season so far with fourth, beating out the PREMA Racing duo of Jak Crawford and Oliver Bearman.

America’s Kaylen Frederick was seventh, as second-in-the-standings Roman Stanek settled for P8. Hampered by traffic on his final attempt, Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar was frustrated to only be able to claim ninth, as Kush Maini rounded out the top 10. Reece Ushijima, meanwhile, was 12th, and thus secured pole for Saturday’s Sprint Race.

Championship leader Victor Martins endured a difficult session, as the Alpine junior couldn’t crack into the top 10 and qualified in 11th.

The F3 action will resume when lights go out at 0955 local time, where the drivers will have to overcome 18 laps around an unforgiving Silverstone circuit.
