FACTS AND STATS: A fourth career pole for Norris as McLaren bag their first at Zandvoort for 40 years
Lando Norris interrupted Max Verstappen’s pole-streak in Zandvoort, the McLaren man bagging P1 by an impressive margin. The Dutchman starts alongside his championship rival though, which could lead to quite an entertaining start tomorrow. But how did everyone else fare? The same two drivers are on the front row in Zandvoort for the second straight year, but in reverse order.

This is the fourth time this season that Norris and Verstappen share the front row.

Norris bagged his fourth career pole position, and McLaren’s first pole at Zandvoort since Alain Prost in 1984.

This will be McLaren’s 350th front row start in F1.

Norris has five previous starts from P1 (three Grand Prix poles and two Sprint poles) but he has never held the lead on the first lap in any of them.

Norris’ pole lap was the fastest lap at Zandvoort since 2021, the last year of the previous aero rules.

Verstappen starts second, having won his last five consecutive starts from P2 on the grid, including in Spain earlier this season. This is the first time in his career he hasn’t started on pole in his home race.

Oscar Piastri was third, for only his second top-three start in the last seven races. The other one was Hungary, where he won the race.

George Russell grabbed P4, and has now out-qualified Lewis Hamilton 11-4 this season.

Sergio Perez has qualified in the top-five at consecutive races after not managing to do so at the previous seven races.

Charles Leclerc bagged P6 and has qualified in that position for the second time in the last five races.

Fernando Alonso lines up on the fourth row for the third straight race.

Alex Albon starts in the top 10 at Zandvoort for the second year in a row, as he bagged Williams’ best qualifying of the year.

Lando Stroll’s ninth was his best ever qualifying at Zandvoort.

Pierre Gasly managed his third Q3 appearance of the season, as he out-qualified his team mate for the first time in five races.

Carlos Sainz failed to reach Q3 for the second time this year, following Canada.

Hamilton was 12th, having been knocked out in Q2 in Zandvoort for the second year in a row. He’s only won from outside the top 10 once in his career – at Hockenheim in 2018, from 14th on the grid.

This is the third time Hamilton hasn’t made Q3 in 2024, along with Australia and China.

Yuki Tsunoda has out-qualified Daniel Ricciardo 10-5 this season, as the Aussie suffered his fourth Q1 exit of the season.

Nico Hulkenberg out-qualified his team mate for the sixth straight race, as the German leads 12-3 in their head to head.

Esteban Ocon was knocked out in Q1 at Zandvoort for the second year in a row.

Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu both fell in Q1, with the Kick Sauber cars the only ones more than a second off the pace.
