FACTS AND STATS: Leclerc the first to grab multiple poles in Baku, as he eclipses Verstappen's P1 tally

Qualifying in Baku delivered some breath-takingly fast laps, as the drivers weaved their way around this unusual street track, with a fair few clipping the walls for good measure.

There was only one red flag as Lance Stroll crashed out, leaving the rest to fight it out to the flag. In the end, Charles Leclerc saved his very best for his last run in Q3, as Sergio Perez overcame a fuelling issue to grab a spot on the front row. Here are some of the best facts and stats from qualifying in the Land of Fire…

  • Charles Leclerc grabs his fourth consecutive pole position, but Red Bull have won the last three races.

  • He is also the first driver to take multiple pole positions in Baku.

  • Leclerc moves ahead of Max Verstappen with his 15th career pole.

  • Sergio Perez starts second, his second front-row start of the season as he out-qualifies Verstappen in consecutive races for the first time as team mates.

  • Verstappen was third, the same position he started in 2021. He has never been on the front row here.

  • Carlos Sainz was fourth, for his highest ever start in Baku.

  • It is the sixth time in eight race weekends that Ferrari and Red Bull have locked out the front two rows.

  • George Russell starts fifth, only the second time he’s been on the front three rows this season.

  • He also out-qualifies his team mate Lewis Hamilton for the third consecutive race.

  • Pierre Gasly was sixth for AlphaTauri’s best performance of the year. It’s also his second top-six start in Baku after qualifying fourth last year.

  • In starting sixth, Gasly will be in the same slot as Perez was last year when he went on to win the race.

  • Hamilton’s P7 means he has no top-four starts this season, and no top-five starts since Australia.

  • Yuki Tsunoda’s eighth is his best qualifying of the year.

  • Sebastian Vettel starts ninth, the same slot as Monaco and two places higher than Baku last year, when he finished second.

Russell continues his strong run of qualifying form over his team mate

  • There was no McLaren car in the top 10 for the first time since Saudi Arabia.

  • Esteban Ocon has only reached Q3 three times this season.

  • Zhou Guanyu out-qualifies his team mate Valtteri Bottas for the first time, but Alfa Romeo have still never started in the top 10 at this track.

  • Bottas escaped Q1 by one place in both Monaco and Baku.

  • It is the first time Mick Schumacher has been knocked out in Q1 this season.

  • Lance Stroll suffered his third straight Q1 elimination, and also his third straight Q1 elimination in Baku.

  • He also crashed out in Q1 for the second year in a row.
