FORMULA 2: Championship leader De Vries on pole in Austria
FIA Formula 2 Championship leader Nyck De Vries showed no signs of slowing down in Round 6 and looked a cut above the rest of the grid in qualifying, securing pole position with time to spare, ahead of rookie duo Anthoine Hubert and Guanyu Zhou.
The Dutchman set a time good enough for pole within the opening 15 minutes of the session, but cemented P1 with an even better tour of the circuit in the final five minutes, emphasising his current dominance in the Championship.
Meanwhile, French Sprint Race winner Hubert carried his form into Austria and achieved his highest qualifying position in the F2, with a devilishly daring strategy. The Renault junior dived into the pits for fresh rubber ahead of the rest of the grid and returned to an empty Red Bull Ring. He was then able to sear around the track devoid of traffic and set a time good enough for P2, before returning to the pits once again and opting to end his session there.
Championship contenders Nicholas Latifi and Luca Ghiotto both attempted to better their times in the final minutes, but suffered slips on their way around, with Ghiotto locking up at Turn 4 and Latifi running wide at Turn 8. This allowed Zhou to usurp the both of them and follow up his French Sprint Race podium with P3 in Qualifying, behind Hubert and De Vries.
