Gasly revelling in having a ‘good package to fight’ after strong sixth for AlphaTauri at Nurburgring
Pierre Gasly’s impressive sixth in the Eifel Grand Prix maintained AlphaTauri’s hope they could beat Italian rivals Ferrari in the constructors’ championship, with the Frenchman delighting in having a “good package’ to fight with on Sunday afternoons…
Gasly, along with team mate Danill Kvyat, didn’t have the pace to make it into Q3, but with a free tyre choice and a race car that is excelling in the midfield on race day, he fought his way up six places to take sixth.

“I must say this race was really fun, had a lot of fun, lot of battles, some defence, some attack, a bit of everything,” said Gasly. “To be honest I’m really happy, after yesterday’s struggle to end up in sixth position and grab all these points, the team can be really pleased with that.”
It was his fifth points score in six races – a stat which included his shock maiden Grand Prix victory at Monza – and AlphaTauri’s eighth successive race in the points, which is a record for the team, including their time at Toro Rosso and Minardi.
Gasly said AlphaTauri still have work to do to match some of their rivals in the midfield, but he feels they still have a car that is capable of fighting for points at the moment.
“I must say I feel good, [the Nurburgring] still wasn’t the best track for us, the type of corners I could see behind the McLaren, really specific areas where we are struggling more than them,” he said.
“But generally on Sunday, we have a good package to fight through the field and especially in the conditions, I knew it would be hard for everybody and there could be some good opportunities.
“We got the maximum we could, so I think we can be pleased with that and I’m quite excited for the coming races.”
Gasly is 10th in the drivers’ standings, 17 points adrift of Sergio Perez in fifth, while AlphaTauri are now just 13 behind Ferrari in the constructors’ championship with six races to go.
