Haas recruit Ferrari's Head of Chassis Engineering Simone Resta for 2021

Haas will strengthen their technical department in 2021 with the recruitment of Ferrari’s Head of Chassis Engineering Simone Resta, as part of their enhanced relationship with the Italian manufacturer, with Enrico Cardle assuming his role at the Scuderia.

The American team have changed their strategy in F1, after signing the new Concorde Agreement to stay in the sport until at least the end of 2025, opting to run younger drivers with financial backing in a bid to provide more funds to enhance car development and the overall operation.

Part of that plan involved doing a deal with Ferrari, who supply their engine, gearbox and all non-listed parts, to take one of their junior drivers next season – with Mick Schumacher being announced this week.

As part of that arrangement, it is intended that Haas and Ferrari will have a closer relationship and this is the first example of the enhancement, with Resta to join the team on 1 January 2021.

“As from 2021, with the introduction of new regulations, all of us will be facing new challenges that we must tackle with pragmatism and an open mind, which is in fact what we started to do with the organisational changes announced a few months ago,” said Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto.

“It is why we believe that our long-term relationship with Haas, dating back to when it first came into Formula 1, should be the basis for both parties to benefit from any possible synergy, consistent with what is defined in the FIA regulations.

“With that idea in mind, we are pleased to announce that the highly rated Simone Resta will move to strengthen the American team’s technical department as from the start of next year.

“This is a further step in the process of continuous evolution of the team’s technical department. Simone, whom we thank for his efforts to date, will have an important role within a team that has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to Formula 1.

“It has just strengthened an already very close relationship with the Scuderia by taking on Ferrari Driver Academy driver Mick Schumacher.

“Within the Scuderia, Enrico Cardile will now be tasked with coordinating the technical and human resources directly linked to performance development and the design of the car.”

Resta joined Ferrari in 2001, rising to the role of Head of Vehicle Project Coordination (a role otherwise known as chief designer), in 2014, before leaving he team in 2018 to join Ferrari partner Sauber as their Technical Director. He returned to Ferrari in the summer of 2018, looking after the chassis division.

Cardile, meanwhile, takes on extra responsibilities at Ferrari, having taken on the newly-created role as head of a new “Performance Development” department.
