Max Verstappen ended the opening day of action at the Mexico City Grand Prix in successful style by setting the fastest time in Free Practice 2.

The Red Bull driver’s lap of 1m 18.686s on the soft tyre was enough to put him over a tenth ahead of Lando Norris in P2, who had another strong outing in the McLaren during a session featuring some occasional light rain.

Charles Leclerc followed in third, ahead of Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas in fourth. Despite the support of the home fans, Sergio Perez wasn’t quite able to match team mate Verstappen’s time and finished in P5.

Daniel Ricciardo – still readjusting following his recent return to action in Austin – claimed sixth, while Lewis Hamilton set the seventh-fastest lap.

Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri and George Russell rounded out the top 10, with Carlos Sainz just missing out in 11th. Sainz’s countryman Fernando Alonso, meanwhile, suffered a spin during the session and ended FP2 down in P20 after failing to set a representative time on the soft tyre.
