Max Verstappen was made to work hard before going on to seal a special second consecutive victory at his home race at this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix.
Starting on pole, Verstappen led for much of the afternoon but was forced to contend with the pacy Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who were attempting to make the one-stop strategy work.
On the soft tyre, Russell overtook Hamilton – on the medium tyre – to take second place, as Leclerc also made his way past the seven-time world champion to take the final podium spot. Hamilton held on for fourth ahead of Sergio Perez, in fifth.
Carlos Sainz had been running in P5 but was given a five-second penalty at the end for an unsafe release in the pit lane, leaving him to settle for P8, elevating Fernando Alonso to sixth and Lando Norris to seventh.
There was one Safety Car in the race brought about by Valtteri Bottas stopping on track with an engine issue, while there was also a Virtual Safety Car period, as the stewards looked to move the AlphaTauri of Yuki Tsunoda, who was also forced to stop on track.
