Carlos Sainz made it a Ferrari-Red Bull top four, qualifying ahead of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton in fifth, the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso, in sixth, and his former McLaren team mate Lando Norris, in seventh.
Yuki Tsunoda produced a starring performance to qualify eighth, ahead of Lance Stroll, as Oscar Piastri rounded out the top-10. Meanwhile, George Russell suffered a shock, as he was knocked out of Q2, leaving him starting down in P11.
The session was red-flagged twice in Q1 after Nyck De Vries crashed into the barrier at Turn 3, before the man he replaced at AlphaTauri, Pierre Gasly, did similar at the same corner just a few moments later, compounding a difficult opening day in Baku for the Alpine driver.
