Carlos Sainz was fourth quickest in the other Ferrari ahead of his former McLaren team mate Lando Norris, the impressive sixth-placed Nyck de Vries for AlphaTauri, and the Aston Martin duo of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso in seventh and eighth, respectively.
Alex Albon was ninth fastest for Williams, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who were down in 11th and 17th, respectively.
It was a session to forget for Alpine, with Pierre Gasly’s car catching fire, forcing Esteban Ocon to be held out for most of practice as a precaution, while Kevin Magnussen also stopped on track with a fuel pump issue on his Haas.
