Lewis Hamilton led a Mercedes 1-2 in an extended and interrupted second practice session in Montreal, with the Briton setting the pace ahead of team mate George Russell and the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.

Following the limited running in the opening practice session caused by a CCTV issue at the track, FP2 was extended to 90 minutes to give the drivers and their teams a chance to get used to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

And it was Hamilton, with a time of 1m 13.718s, who set the quickest lap, with Russell just 0.027s off the pace. Sainz was third fastest, 0.126s off Hamilton’s time, followed by his compatriot Fernando Alonso, in fourth.

Charles Leclerc was fifth fastest in the other Ferrari, ahead of the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in sixth and eighth, respectively, with Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas sandwiched between the pair.

There were two red flags in the session, the first caused by Nico Hulkenberg stopping on track with an engine failure, before Esteban Ocon also stopped by the side of the road with a suspected loss of water pressure on his Alpine.
