Oscar Piastri claimed the first Grand Prix pole position of his career in superb fashion, edging out George Russell and his McLaren team mate in an exhilarating Qualifying session in China.
After enduring a tough home race last time out in Australia, Piastri built on his impressive podium-worthy drive in the Shanghai Sprint to take pole position with a time of 1m 30.641s, a new lap record at this circuit.

A second consecutive McLaren front row lock-out looked highly likely before Russell surged up the timesheets in his Mercedes to take P2, with Lando Norris relegated to third place just ahead of Max Verstappen.
Lewis Hamilton, winner of the Sprint earlier today, was forced to settle for P5 alongside Charles Leclerc as neither Ferrari driver found the necessary improvements when it mattered in their final runs in Q3.
Elsewhere, the Racing Bulls pair of Isack Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda both made it into the top 10, with the rookie clocking the seventh-fastest time of the session to outqualify his experienced team mate with a remarkable performance.
It was another session to forget for Liam Lawson, who is set to line up last on the grid in his Red Bull as incredibly small margins separated the field throughout the Qualifying hour.
