‘I’m devastated I won’t be racing this weekend’ says Hamilton after positive Covid-19 test
Lewis Hamilton says he is “devastated” that he will miss this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix, after testing positive for Covid-19 in Bahrain, adding he is “really lucky that I feel OK with only mild symptoms”.
The seven-time world champion had mild symptoms when he woke up on Monday morning and at the same time was told someone he came in contact with before travelling to Bahrain had tested positive.
The Briton had a test, following three negative results last week, and this one came back positive, as did a subsequent retest. He is now isolating as per the guidelines.
“Hi guys, I’m devastated that I won’t be racing this weekend,” he said on social media. “Since we started the season in June, my team and I have been taking all the precautions we possibly can and following the regulations everywhere we’ve been in order to stay safe.
Please look after yourselves out there, you can never be too careful
“Unfortunately even though I returned three negative results this past week I woke up yesterday morning with mild symptoms and requested another test which came back positive. I’ve immediately gone into self-isolation for 10 days.
“I’m gutted not to be able to race this weekend but my priority is to follow the protocols and advice to protect others. I’m really lucky that I feel OK with only mild symptoms and will do my best to stay fit and healthy.
“Please look after yourselves out there, you can never be too careful. These are worrying times for everyone and we need to make sure we are looking after ourselves and each other. Stay positive.”
The length of his isolation period means that Hamilton is not yet out of contention to compete in the finale in Abu Dhabi. He’ll need to return a negative test before flying, and again when he lands.
Mercedes have yet to confirm who will sub in for Hamilton at this weekend’s race, alongside Valtteri Bottas.
