Italian GP qualifying facts and stats: Hamilton sets new all-time fastest F1 lap record

Lewis Hamilton managed pole position by just 0.069s in Italian Grand Prix qualifying as Mercedes ended something of a drought at the Temple of Speed - and you probably won't be surprised to hear that the world champion's lap broke another F1 record...

• Hamilton’s sixth pole in seven races was clinched with an all-time F1 record lap of 1m18.887s at 164.267mph/264.362km/h in FP3.

• Valtteri Bottas qualified second to put himself on the front row for the first time at Monza and secure Mercedes’ first front-row lockout at Monza since 2016.

• Carlos Sainz provided McLaren a third top-three start of 2020 and a first top-three start at Monza since their front-row lockout in 2012.

• Sergio Perez of Racing Point has never started in the top-three in his F1 career as he took P4 on the grid for the eighth time.

• Fifth-place for Max Verstappen means Red Bull haven’t had a top-five start at Monza in the entire hybrid era; they locked out the front-row here in 2013.

• A first top-six start for Lando Norris since the British Grand Prix means he has started in the top-10 for 15 consecutive races. His 2021 McLaren team mate Daniel Ricciardo managed P7, two places lower than he did in 2019.

• Having reached Q3 at Monza in all four of his visits, Racing Point driver Lance Stroll took P8 – his best qualification since starting on the front row in 2017.

• AlphaTauri, previously known as Toro Rosso, seek their first points at Monza since 2013 on Sunday with Pierre Gasly 10th and Daniil Kvyat 11th. The Russian qualified 11th for the second-straight weekend.

• For the first time since 1984, neither Ferrari made the top 10 in qualifying at Monza when Michele Alboreto started 11th and Rene Arnoux 14th. However, in 1984, Alboreto finished second in a race of attrition.

• Sebastian Vettel, in his final season with Ferrari, was last eliminated in Q1 at Hockenheim last season, where he finished third. This was his fourth-consecutive failure to reach Q3.

• Haas’s Romain Grosjean has been eliminated in Q1 for the second-straight year at Monza and the sixth time in 2020, but Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi has not progressed from Q1 this season – and is the only driver not to have done so.

• George Russell out-qualified his team mate (Nicholas Latifi) for the 29th consecutive race, but this time the two Williams were split by just 0.130s.
