AUSTIN, TEXAS - OCTOBER 20: Lando Norris of Great Britain driving the (4) McLaren MCL38 Mercedes

McLaren have submitted a request for a ‘Right of Review’ concerning the penalty that Lando Norris received in the United States Grand Prix during his late-race battle with Max Verstappen.

Norris was handed a five-second time penalty for overtaking his championship rival off the track as the two fought over P3, meaning that he was demoted at the line from third place down to fourth.

The punishment attracted much debate after the race, with McLaren boss Andrea Stella later stating his view to Sky Sports F1 that “the way the stewards interfered with a beautiful piece of motorsport was inappropriate because both cars went off track so both cars gained an advantage”.

Red Bull's Christian Horner, meanwhile, argued that it was "very much a black and white scenario" in terms of Norris deserving a penalty.

As such, it was confirmed as the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend got under way that the ‘Right of Review’ had been submitted.

A document released by the FIA stated that “the team representative is required to attend a video conference with the Stewards at 1430 hrs Mexico time on Friday, October 25 2024".

The note also confirms that the hearing will be in two parts, the first being to hear evidence which will determine whether there is a “significant and relevant new element which was unavailable to the party seeking the Review at the time of the Decision concerned”.

If it is deemed that this element exists, a second part of the hearing will take place.
