Gian Carlo Minardi, founder of the eponymous Formula 1 outfit now known as AlphaTauri, has been elected to the role of President of the FIA's Single-Seater Commission.
Minardi, who in 2004 became President of the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI) Land Speed Records Commission, was voted in by members of the World Motor Sport Council. In 2020 he was elected President of the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari – Imola – which hosts the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on April 24.
The Italian has taken over the FIA role over Bob Fernley, who in turn took the role over from current F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali.
His Faenza-based Formula 1 team was founded in 1985 and purchased by Paul Stoddart in 2001 – before being sold to Red Bull in 2005 to become Toro Rosso and then AlphaTauri.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “I warmly welcome the election of Gian Carlo Minardi as FIA Single-Seater Commission President. He is a major figure in motor sport. I look forward to working with him to further develop the Single-Seater pyramid around the world.”
