MUST-SEE: Drama at Monza as Antonelli crashes out of F1 practice debut with Mercedes
Share
Kimi Antonelli was only 10 minutes into his Formula 1 weekend debut with Mercedes when he dramatically crashed out of Friday afternoon’s opening free practice session for the Italian Grand Prix.
F2 racer Antonelli, 18, was given the chance to drive George Russell’s updated W15 in FP1 at Monza but, after some eye-catching early pace, he lost control of his car through the high-speed Parabolica.
Dropping the rear upon entry, sliding across the track and through the gravel, and then slamming into the barriers, a huge amount of damage was caused and leaves Mercedes mechanics with significant work to do before FP2.
Antonelli swiftly reported that he was “okay” over the radio, along with some swearing and an apology, before team boss Toto Wolff responded: “Kimi, all good. All good, Kimi.”
