As one of three British drivers on the grid at Silverstone this weekend, McLaren’s Lando Norris has unveiled a special helmet that he will sport for the British Grand Prix, with the livery designed by a six-year-old fan.

Norris pulled off he covers of his new helmet design on his Twitch channel, showing off the lid embellished with crayon drawings from a young fan, picked from “probably thousands” of submissions to a competition run by Norris, according to the McLaren driver.

“I love it – it’s very original,” said Norris during the unveil. “We went through a huge amount of designs, probably thousands of them… I wanted to go with something that was just very original, something I wasn’t used to, something that probably means a lot to the person, and it means a lot to me. It reminds me of myself when I was younger, designing helmets, drawing away when I was five or six years old.”

Norris is no stranger to one-off helmet designs, with the 20-year-old having used, among others, a hand-painted style design at last year’s Japanese Grand Prix, a ‘Day of the Dead’-inspired helmet for the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix, and a Valentino Rossi tribute lid for the Italian Grand Prix.

And the McLaren driver was planning for more custom designs in the future, as he told his fans on Twitch: “I want to do one year of Formula 1 just with fan helmets.”
