Pirelli begin testing 2017 prototype tyres

Pirelli are undertaking a private test at the Fiorano circuit in Maranello, Italy on Tuesday as they look to begin developing tyres for the new era of Formula One racing from 2017.

Ferrari test driver Jean-Eric Vergne has been charged with driving duties, with Pirelli making use of a 2014-spec Ferrari F14-T.

The tyres, meanwhile, are the same size as this year's, but 'contain a number of prototype elements' aimed at 2017 developments according to a statement from Pirelli.

The test comes after the FIA formally approved a plan to allow Pirelli to test prototype tyres - in 2016 size, and on 2013- or 2014-spec machinery - ahead of next year, when regulation changes mean tyre dimensions are set to widen substantially.

Formula One's official tyre supplier will also be able to make use of 25 car days of testing, using current cars and 2017-size tyres, in 2016 and again over the following two seasons.
