Qualifying facts and stats for the Styrian Grand Prix: A first pole at the Red Bull Ring for Red Bull

Max Verstappen's first pole position at the Red Bull Ring was also Red Bull's first pole at their eponymous circuit – but what other interesting facts and statistics emerged from qualifying for the Styrian Grand Prix?

  • Verstappen is on pole at the Red Bull Ring after being second on the grid in his last three visits here. Red Bull on pole at the Red Bull Ring for the first time.

  • Verstappen has more poles this season (three) than in any other season of his career.

QUALIFYING: Verstappen fends off Mercedes duo to take Styrian GP pole on Red Bull home soil

  • Bottas only has one front row start this season, and he loses a front row start due to a penalty today (Hamilton lost a front row due to a penalty last year).

Despite qualifying third, Hamilton starts on the front row for this race

  • Hamilton is promoted to the front row, meaning the front row is the same as it was in the French GP.

  • Norris has qualified third on the grid at this circuit twice, but never anywhere else. McLaren start third on the grid at the Red Bull Ring for the third successive race here.

  • Perez will be fourth on the grid, the same as at Paul Ricard.

  • Gasly in P6 - that's the sixth time he's been in the top six on the grid this year (already a single-season record for any driver in this team's history under any name).

Perez, donning a special helmet for this round, starts fourth

  • Leclerc in P7 – also the same as at Paul Ricard.

  • Tsunoda in P8 - his second Q3 appearance in the last three races, but starts 11th thanks to a three-place grid penalty for blocking Bottas.

  • Alonso therefore starts eighth after only his second Q3 appearance at Red Bull Ring in his career.

  • Stroll – outqualified Vettel for first time in four races and starts ninth.

  • Russell missed Q3 by 0.008s seconds but starts 10th with a free choice of tyres. He also qualified 11th in the wet here last season.

Tsunoda was hit by a three-place penalty after the session, for impeding Bottas

  • Sainz is knocked out in Q2 for the second time this year (the other being Imola).

  • Ricciardo – fourth time in six races that he has failed to reach Q3 (Norris has reached Q3 at every race). Ricciardo was second in FP2.

  • Ocon has not made Q3 in any of the last four races.

  • Raikkonen has gone out in Q1 four times in eight races.
