It was a strong start to the Miami Grand Prix for pole-sitter Max Verstappen, while a close battle for second place unfolded behind him into Turn 1.

Verstappen launched off the line to hold the lead as the lights went out, but Charles Leclerc had a poor getaway from P2. This allowed Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez to sneak through before a lock-up from Perez caused him to go wide – and narrowly avoid tagging Verstappen in the process.

Sainz also slipped back as a result, allowing Leclerc to reclaim second place, while Oscar Piastri had a particularly impressive start to put himself up to third from P6 on the grid.

Further back there was drama for Alpine as a fierce intra-team scrap unfolded between Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon. The pair went wheel-to-wheel before Gasly ultimately emerged ahead by the end of the first lap.
