ROAD TO F1: Lundgaard controls F2 Sprint Race as Schumacher cements championship lead

“Redemption for yesterday,” Christian Lundgaard said with a wry smile following his second Formula 2 win of the season, and a dominant one at that. The Renault junior finished a mega 14s ahead of Louis Deletraz, firmly making amends for a frustrating Feature Race, when he lost the lead from pole.

The Dane had started Saturday on pole, but lost first to Nikita Mazepin in the dying laps and ended up sixth, as a Safety Car gifted the alternate strategy drivers an advantage – of which Lundgaard was not one. But his Sunday was a complete contrast, starting from third he thundered to first off the line, and from there, the win never looked in doubt.

Mazepin’s afternoon was a contrasting one as well, but for totally opposite reasons. The Hitech driver collided with his team mate Luca Ghiotto, ending the Italian’s race and earning himself a 10s time penalty.

Meanwhile Mick Schumacher was able to stretch his lead at the top of the championship standings, finishing fourth, with his main rival and fellow Ferrari Adademy Driver Callum Ilott back in sixth.
