Stroll pleased with British GP points finish after ‘frustrating’ weekend comes good at the perfect time

A frustrating British Grand Prix weekend came good at the right time for Aston Martin's Lance Stroll, as after struggling in qualifying and the F1 Sprint, he found his form on the Sunday to race into the top 10 when it really mattered.

Stroll qualified 15th on Friday and ended the Sprint one place better off in 14th, lowering expectations for the race. However, strong getaways both at the original start and after the red flag saw the Canadian in the mix for points and he ended up a solid eighth to add four more points to his 2021 tally.

“Yeah I am pleased, it was by far the most positive day this weekend,” Stroll said. “We got a good balance in the car which we didn’t really have throughout the whole weekend, and a good start which set up my race… It was a pretty frustrating weekend up until then.

“From where we were starting and the challenges we had this weekend I think it was a good race. Two good starts and making up some positions set us up for a good race.

“We had some issues with balance and some other things. Power as well. So a lot of things and we were just chasing our tail after a challenging FP1 and then qualifying. [On Sunday] we finally got the car in a happy place which helps.”

Meanwhile, Aston Martin team boss Otmar Szafnauer pointed out that no driver in the race made up as many positions on race day as Stroll.

“We had hoped to be coming away from our home Grand Prix with more than the four points we eventually scored," said Szafnauer, "but those four points came our way as a result of a superb drive by Lance, who made up six places this afternoon to convert a P14 grid slot to a P8 finish. No driver made up more places."
