Some drivers have to wait years for their chance to really make an impression in Formula 1 – others have managed to arrive in the sport and make an instant impact.

In the video above we count down some of those stars who turned up in Grand Prix racing and instantly looked at home, often shocking their more experiences contemporaries along the way.

Back in 1961 Ricardo Rodriguez was just 19-years-old when he got the call to race for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. He would be the youngest man ever to start a Grand Prix – and he did it from second on the grid after a quite incredible qualifying performance.

The likes of Carlos Reutemann, Mario Andretti and Jacques Villeneuve went one better than that, nabbing pole on their debuts.

While others have pulled off results in their first race that immediately made the racing world sit up and take notice – drivers like Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert and Mark Webber who all made headlines on their first time out.
