It is a slightly curious fact about Formula 1 that for all the complexity and expense of the power units and aerodynamics, the only part of the cars that actually make contact with the track are the four tyres.
The right tyres can mean victory, the wrong ones can cost you dearly, and sometimes they can lead to some of the most dramatic moments in racing.
Of course the British Grand Prix is still fresh in the memory, as first Valtteri Bottas, then Carlos Sainz and then race leder Lewis Hamilton all suffered failures in the penultimate two laps of the race.
