Norris had looked to have the upper hand of the McLaren duo for much of the day, but a well-timed 1m 28.114s effort for Piastri ensured it was the Australian who ended the day with his name atop the timesheets by 0.049s.
Isack Hadjar was third for Racing Bulls, with Lewis Hamilton, Liam Lawson, George Russell and Charles Leclerc all within 0.1s of the Frenchman's time.
