Fernando Alonso was the man who finally ended Michael Schumacher's vice-like grip on the Formula 1 World Championship in the mid-2000s, before going on to cement his status as one of the most respected drivers in the sport.
Schumacher had won five titles in a row before Alonso ended his run in 2005 – and in the process the Spanish star completed one of the most audacious and symbolic overtaking manoeuvres ever seen in F1.

Heading into that year's Japanese Grand Prix Alonso had already stolen Schumacher's title crown, and in the race itself he pulled off a superb move around the outside of the seven-time champ going into the fearsome 130R corner at Suzuka.
Grand Prix fans were witnessing a changing of the guard in real time, but that was just one of the amazing moments that came to define Alonso's F1 career. Check out the video above to see more brilliance from the two-time champion.
