F2: Drugovich secures second-straight pole in stop-start Zandvoort session

Felipe Drugovich took his second consecutive pole position and fourth of the 2022 Formula 2 season comfortably around Zandvoort. The MP Motorsport driver was two-tenths clear of next-best Jack Doohan, with the Alpine Academy driver able to close the gap to the championship leader. Williams junior Logan Sargeant ended up third for Carlin.

Doohan had been quickest for most of the session following his fast start in practice. He was setting the fastest times in the first and second runs of the qualifying session comfortably and was looking good for pole until the final runs. His Brazilian rival usurped him for provisional pole in the final laps of the session.

Drugovich’s closest challenger in the title fight, Theo Pourchaire, had a nightmare session, crashing out early on. The ART Grand Prix driver will start both races from 16th position on the grid, leaving his slender title hopes in the balance. The Frenchman’s crash brought out an early red flag and prompted a dash back out on circuit for a second effort.

Another late red flag stoppage prevented any further improvements. A spin for Jehan Daruvala between Turns 7 and 8 meant another halt in the session and with under four minutes remaining of the session and without enough time to warm the tyres up for another flying lap, there were no further improvements.

Richard Verschoor didn’t disappoint the Dutch fans, going fourth-fastest for Trident on home soil just ahead of the second red flag. Red Bull junior Ayumu Iwasa heads up the third row ahead of Carlin’s Liam Lawson. Dennis Hauger, Juri Vips, Marcus Armstrong and Clement Novalak completed the top 10.
