Sergio Perez will start Sunday's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix from P1 for the second year in a row after the Red Bull driver saw off the challenge of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin to take the second pole position of his career.

Perez’s one and only representative time in Q3 of a 1m 28.265s could not be beaten by his rivals, with Leclerc – who will take a 10-place grid penalty for the race – finishing 0.155s off the pace, ahead of Alonso, in third, who was 0.465s off behind the Mexican.

Mercedes' George Russell qualified fourth, ahead of the sister Ferrari Carlos Sainz, with Lance Stroll in sixth. Lewis Hamilton finished down in P8, behind Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, but just ahead of McLaren’s rookie driver Oscar Piastri – who made it into Q3 for the first time in his career – with Pierre Gasly rounding out the top 10.

Max Verstappen’s qualifying came to an abrupt end in Q2 when he was forced to pit with what Red Bull later revealed was a driveshaft issue, leaving the Red Bull driver down in 15th.
