HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from qualifying in Imola as Verstappen beats Leclerc to pole position

Max Verstappen bested rival Charles Leclerc in a dramatic qualifying session to claim his first pole position of the season at Imola ahead of tomorrow’s Sprint.

Verstappen set a time of 1m 27.999s on the intermediate tyre in Q3, with championship leader Leclerc a further 0.799s behind. Despite hitting the barrier at the end of qualifying, Lando Norris did enough to secure P3. Verstappen’s team mate Sergio Perez was only able to finish in seventh.

It was also a tough day for Mercedes with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton only able to qualify in P11 and P13 respectively.

Carlos Sainz was one of five drivers to bring out the red flags in the session after the Spaniard crashed his car into the barriers in Q2. Also bringing out the red flags in the session where Alex Albon, Kevin Magnussen, Valtteri Bottas and Lando Norris.
