Charles Leclerc continued his dominance of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend by taking pole position for tomorrow’s race despite spinning on his first run in Q3.
Leclerc set a time of 1m 18.750s on his lone run in Q3 to beat championship rival Max Verstappen by 0.323s, and take his fourth pole of the season. Verstappen was unable to get a final run in after complaining of losing power but still managed to finish ahead of Carlos Sainz – in P3 – who finished 0.416s behind Leclerc.
The Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton qualified in P4 and P6 respectively, sandwiching the Red Bull of Sergio Perez in P5. It was a positive session for Haas, with Kevin Magnussen in P8 and Mick Schumacher – who got into Q3 for the first time in his career – in P10.
It was a tough day for Alpine, with Esteban Ocon qualifying in 12th and home favourite Fernando Alonso suffering from a shock Q1 exit to end up P17.
