Monaco Grand Prix: Race facts and stats

Sunday’s chaotic Monaco Grand Prix was the perfect send-off to Niki Lauda, with all three podium finishers coming from teams the former world champion represented during his Formula 1 career. Here are some other notable statistics from the latest edition of F1’s jewel in the crown.

• Lewis Hamilton secured his third Monaco Grand Prix victory. But this was his first from pole position, securing his previous wins in 2008 and 2016 while lining up third on the grid.
• Mercedes have still won every race of the 2019 season, but their run of consecutive one-two finishes has come to an end. Valtteri Bottas recovered to third after contact with Max Verstappen in the pit lane caused the Finn to make an extra stop.
• After Charles Leclerc’s early retirement, Sebastian Vettel gave the Ferrari team something to smile about with a second consecutive P2 finish at the Monaco Grand Prix to secure the Scuderia’s best finish of the season.
• Verstappen was demoted to fourth after receiving a five-second penalty for his part in the pitlane incident with Bottas. Despite pressuring leader Hamilton, the Dutchman has never led a lap or finished on the podium in the principality.

• But there was good news for someone at Red Bull. Pierre Gasly’s P5 is his best finish for the team. The Frenchman also secured an extra point for setting the fastest lap, the second time he has achieved that this season.
• Monaco is one of Carlos Sainz’s favourite circuits. His sixth-place finish matches the Spaniards best result at the circuit and continues his run of scoring points in every one of his five appearances here. After a slow start to 2019, Sainz has now scored points in the last three races, but the result is his best since joining McLaren.
• It’s been a good weekend for Toro Rosso who finish in the top 8 for the first time in Monaco and for the first time since the USA Grand Prix in 2015. Kvyat’s seventh is his best for the Italian team after finishing P9 and P10 some 13 times with the team.
• Daniel Ricciardo won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2018 with Red Bull but could only manage P10 with Renault this weekend. It’s the first time the Australian has finished outside the top 5 in this race since the start of F1’s hybrid era.
• Williams made some progress this weekend with George Russell equalling the team’s best result of the season with 15th. Despite an early spin at Rascasse, Robert Kubica recovered to P18 and is the first time the Polish driver was not last across the chequered flag this season.
