Sir Stirling Moss: The world reacts to the death of a racing icon

The passing of Sir Stirling Moss at the age of 90 has produced a flurry of tributes from the racing world, as people honoured one of the all-time greats of Formula 1.

Leading the tributes was F1 motorsport boss Ross Brawn.

"I got to know Stirling after his Motorsport career was finishing and mine was starting," said Brawn. "I was proud that I was able to count him as a friend. He exceeded the term legend. His abilities in any sort of racing car were truly exceptional.

"What I admired the most were the qualities of Stirling as a true gentleman. His behaviour towards his fellow racing drivers, and people in racing generally, were an example to us all. He fought as hard as anyone to succeed and win, but he never crossed the boundaries and he always competed in a proper way. He set the standard all competitors should aspire to.

"He was always fun to be with and enjoyed life, with Susie, to the maximum. He drove me around Goodwood several times in a Ferrari SWB in which he won the 1960 TT. Memories that will never leave me. Stirling Moss - a truly special person."

F1 CEO Chase Carey added: “We have lost a great man and a fearless competitor. The word legend is used a lot in sport but Stirling Moss was a true legend and inspiration who earned his place in history with guts, determination and skill. I want to send my personal condolences and the thoughts of the F1 community to his family.”

Former F1 racer turned commentator Martin Brundle, who partnered Moss during his brief return to saloon car racing in the 1980s with Audi, tweeted that Moss was a “remarkable man”.

Current Mercedes racer, six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, met former Mercedes racer Moss on several occasions. He said how grateful he was to have shared 'special moments' with the iconic British racer.

Sir Jackie Stewart paid tribute to "my ultimate hero" saying he was the "most dynamic, most charismatic racing driver there has ever been."

Current Williams racer George Russell also paid tribute to Moss, writing: “Only had the pleasure of meeting him briefly a couple of times but even that was enough to understand why he was so highly respected. My thoughts are with his family.”

Meanwhile, former HRT and Lotus racer Karun Chandhok shared some memories of meeting Moss over the years.

FIA President Jean Todt said Moss was "a true legend in motor sport and he will remain so forever," while three-time Grand Prix winner Johnny Herbert surely speaks for countless racing fans with his message.

1978 World Champion Mario Andretti said Moss was "my hero". He added that he was a "true giant in our sport and will be missed forever".

Two British manufacturers, Aston Martin and Jaguar – both of whom he drove for in sports car racing – also paid their respects, as did Ferrari, to whom Moss was regularly a thorn in the side.
