Turkish GP qualifying facts and stats: Stroll ends a seven year run for F1’s big three

Lance Stroll shocked the F1 world with his maiden pole position in Turkey – and in doing so the Canadian ended a run for F1's top teams that stretched all the way back to 2014...

• Stroll is the first Canadian to take pole position since the 1997 European Grand Prix, where Jacques Villeneuve put his Williams on pole.

• The Racing Point driver is also the fifth-youngest polesitter of all-time at 22 years and 17 days.

• Lewis Hamilton, sixth, had his worst qualifying performance since Germany 2018 when he was 14th in qualifying... but he still won there! And he has won from sixth before, in the 2014 British GP.

• Racing Point, formerly Force India, took their first pole position in any guise since Giancarlo Fisichella's 2009 Belgian GP shock pole.

• Mercedes' 100% pole record has been halted in 2020, but they maintain the record as an engine supplier thanks to the team in pink.

• Max Verstappen has not taken pole this year, qualifying second in Turkey for the fourth time in 2020. But he and Stroll will be reassured, as every Turkish GP has been won from the front row.

• This is the first pole for any team other than Mercedes, Red Bull or Ferrari, since Felipe Massa's at the 2014 Austrian GP for Williams.

• Sergio Perez has started fourth nine times in his career. Here, he starts a career-best P3 on the grid – though he qualified second in Baku 2016, he had a gearbox penalty. And he still finished third in that race.

• Perez's P3 is the best for a Mexican driver since Pedro Rodriguez's front-row start in the 1971 Dutch GP.

• Alex Albon managed fourth on the grid - his joint-best starting position.

• For the second-consecutive race, Daniel Ricciardo qualified fifth. It was his fourth P5 qualification of the season.

• Esteban Ocon has been outqualified by Ricciardo for the 12th race in a row. He qualified seventh the last three times he reached Q3.

• Kimi Raikkonen's eighth place is his best for Alfa Romeo since Brazil 2019, and Antonio Giovinazzi joined him in Q3 to mark Sauber's 500th world championship entry. The last time Alfa had two cars in Q3 was at the 2019 Austrian GP.

• There was no McLaren in Q3 for the first time this season; no Ferrari in Q3 for the fourth time in 2020. Both McLarens received grid drops here.

• Sebastian Vettel outqualified Charles Leclerc for the first time in 11 races.

• Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean are now tied 7-7 in their qualifying head-to-head at Haas.

• Daniil Kvyat reached Q3 at Imola but was out in Q1 here.

• And George Russell continued his run of outqualifying team mates, stretching that to 35 races. He has grid penalties that push him to the back of the grid here, however.
