Williams awarded Three-Star Environmental Accreditation from the FIA

After announcing their plan to become climate positive by 2030, Williams have been awarded three star accreditation by the FIA – the governing body's highest level of environmental recognition.

The FIA’s Environmental Accreditation Programme helps teams measure their environmental performance with a specific programme and, after an audit in August, the FIA awarded Williams with the highest accolade – which Mercedes were also awarded in 2020 and Ferrari in June 2021.

on Wednesday Williams announced their intention to become climate positive in 2030, an ambitious sustainability strategy that will see the team take action on reducing waste, increasing biodiversity at their base and increasing diversity in their workforce, among other projects.

"Formula 1 has the power to inspire millions of people across the globe and has been at the forefront of an incredible amount of advanced technologies," said Williams CEO Jost Capito.

"We, as an industry, have the power to use our sport as a platform and catalyst for good, helping to tackle the challenges we face as a planet and Williams Racing therefore welcomes the FIA’s Environmental Accreditation Programme as an incentive to push the envelope on climate action. We are proud to have achieved this highest level of accreditation and will continue in our pursuit of ambitious objectives to help raise the baseline of sustainable performance in our industry and beyond."

F1 CEO and President Stefano Domenicali added: "“I congratulate Williams Racing on this amazing achievement which shows the strong commitment by the team and the whole sport to create and deliver a sustainable sport for the future. Formula 1 has a commitment to be net zero carbon by 2030 and this involves everyone in the sport.

"We are all doing a lot already to reduce our carbon footprint, eliminate waste and single use plastics and within the coming years we will create a sustainable fuel for the cars that will be a game changer for the automotive sector. Once again Formula 1 can be a leader in technological innovations that provide real world solutions and Williams Racing is showing that it is playing its big part in positive change.”

While FIA President Jean Todt added: "The FIA Environmental Certification Framework is an important standard by which sustainability is measured across motor sport and its stakeholders.

Pioneering innovations have always been part of motor racing. FIA and Formula 1 have pledged to be net zero carbon by 2030 and all teams can thus contribute to this strategic objective."
