Fans of Michael Schumacher have gathered for a vigil outside the French hospital in Grenoble where the seven-time Formula One world champion is being treated following his skiing accident.

Schumacher, currently in a medically-induced coma after sustaining severe head injuries in a fall in the resort of Meribel last week, turned 45 on Friday.

Ferrari, the team with whom Schumacher won 72 Grands Prix between 1996 and 2006, issued a statement of support for their former driver, saying: “he is tackling the most important fight of his life.”

“Everyone at Ferrari, from President Luca di Montezemolo and Team Principal Stefano Domenicali, who are in touch all the time with Michael’s family and those closest to him, are continuously watching how his situation evolves,” the statement continued.

Schumacher’s family, meanwhile, have thanked well-wishers for their support via a message on the German’s official website.

“Following Michael's skiing accident, we would like to thank the people from all around the world who have expressed their sympathy and sent their best wishes for his recovery,” it read. “They are giving us great support. We all know he is a fighter and will not give up. Thank you.”

Schumacher remains critical but stable following the last official update on his condition.
