Hartley to miss British GP qualifying after FP3 crash

Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley will miss qualifying for this weekend's British Grand Prix after his big crash in final practice. The Kiwi suffered suspension failure at high-speed during FP3 on Saturday morning, pitching him into the barriers and causing extensive damage to his car. With his team unable to provide fixes in time for qualifying, Hartley - who escaped the accident unscathed - will start Sunday's race at the stewards' discretion from the rear of the field.

Hartley’s front-left suspension failed under braking at the end of Wellington Straight, putting him out of the session with less than 15 minutes on the clock. He walked away from the incident, and was given the all-clear to drive following checks at the medical centre.

Team mate Pierre Gasly didn’t return to the track as the team checked his car’s suspension following Hartley’s crash.

As there is only two hours between the end of final practice and qualifying, the team have been unable to repair the car, which suffered significant damage, meaning he will take no part in the session.

A Toro Rosso spokesperson told Formula1.com the team completed a full front suspension change on Gasly’s car ahead of the one-hour session that will decide Sunday's grid.
