ICYMI: Mullets, team mate goals, celebrities and wild weather – it’s the best social media from Australia

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - MARCH 15: Fans gather for autographs prior to final practice ahead of the F1

Melbourne made a return as the opening race weekend of the season for 2025, with the drivers and teams enjoying all the vibes Down Under. Jack Doohan and Oscar Piastri had the pleasure to be racing on home soil, while honorary Aussie Valtteri Bottas also got in on the action. The rain then fell on Sunday, leading to plenty of duck-themed humour. So, here is all the best social media you might have missed from Melbourne...

Piastri's biggest fan

Oscar Piastri was in hot demand all weekend in his home town of Melbourne, as were his Grandma's lamingtons that she made for the McLaren hospitality unit.

But no one was more delighted to see their hero than this young fan, with Piastri making their day as he stopped for a photo.

One, two, three, four

Toto Wolff got his numbers confused on Sunday, when he spent much of the race tracking three drivers not two - briefly forgetting that Lewis Hamilton was no longer at Mercedes.

But fortunately, by the time he met this young fan, he had just about managed to count to five - before it turned out he'd gone one too many again.

Rugby stars and Grammy winners

The celebs were out in force in Melbourne, with Liam Lawson meeting a Kiwi legend in rugby star Dan Carter, while Raye was spotted hanging out at Ferrari.

Sadly, Carter's winning ways did not rub off on Lawson, who crashed out in his opening race as a Red Bull driver.

Nor did Raye shed much luck on the Ferrari boys, who battled hard for a small haul of points in the lower reaches of the top 10 on Sunday. That being said, she could have gone in for a rendition of 'Oscar winning tears' at McLaren on Sunday, with all three words appropriate - just not necessarily in that order...

Fans of Ferrari

Everyone loves Ferrari – or at least that's what the Scuderia would have you believe. But it seemed to be true in Melbourne, with Pierre Gasly loitering near Charles Leclerc, while Nico Hulkenberg looked less like he was sheltering from the rain than chasing autographs.

But it turns out, even the Ferrari stars have idols – and the Racing Bulls are sure of exactly who is Hamilton's favourite this season...

Team mate goals

There are plenty of bromances brewing up and down the field, from Hamilton and Leclerc's ongoing chess rivalry, to Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto sniggering like a pair of school boys in the team photo.

But this is the true goal of any team - to see their drivers cheering each other on. Hadjar might have been knocked out in Q2 on Saturday, but he stuck around to see how Yuki Tsunoda got on, and seemed pretty pleased for his team mate after an epic drive to fifth on the grid.

Talking heads

Jack Doohan had plenty of fans in attendance as he experienced the wonders of a home race for the very first time. And many even appeared complete with replica heads of the Aussie star, creating a tableau more at home at St Kilda's Luna Park than Albert Park.

Alas, it was all in vain as Doohan crashed out early in Sunday's wet-weather race. Hopefully those cutouts don't haunt him all the way to Shanghai.

Full send, Aussie style

Lawson is an honorary Aussie - well, this race is as close as the Kiwi star gets to a home event. As such, he went all in with a mullet for Melbourne - although rumours abound that this was a wig...

If he wants to go even further, he has no better inspiration than Valtteri Bottas, who was in Melbourne in his new role with Mercedes.

His bleach blonde mullet is ageing well, and showing no signs of going away just yet.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

No, it is George Russell, back in the iconic 'T' pose from a couple of years back. You might remember it from F1's opening title sequence, which Russell then adopted as his new celebration.

Well, it is back where it belongs in the 2025 opening titles, but that doesn't seem to have stopped Russell adopting it at all opportunities.

Whether he'll get to do so as a race winner remains to be seen.

The skies open again

Poor Lando Norris. He got soaked on the grid, drenched in the first part of the race, and he had only just started to dry out when the skies opened again.

He managed to celebrate his win briefly before getting soaked on the podium as the weather gods once again unleashed a deluge on Albert Park, and if that wasn't enough, his team decided to give him one last drenching.
