Sainz gets five-place grid drop in Canada

Carlos Sainz will lose five places on the grid for this afternoon’s Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada 2016 after Toro Rosso changed the gearbox on his car, which was damaged in the Spaniard’s qualifying accident on Saturday.

Sainz was eliminated in Q2 after getting it wrong through the final chicane and making contact with the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve’s infamous ‘Wall of Champions’.

With his previous gearbox having not completed the six consecutive events required by the regulations, the resulting penalty means he is expected to drop from 15th to 20th on the final Montreal grid.

Meanwhile, Kevin Magnussen is expected to start the race from the pit lane after Renault had his car re-scrutineered this morning following the Dane’s FP3 crash which prevented him participating in qualifying.
